Sunningdale
Golf Club was seeking to improve the Winter playability of some
of their clay based greens, but did not wish to change the character
of the greens by rebuilding. The Club Secretary, Stewart Zuill
and Course Manager, Brian Turner considered a number of different
options and visited one of Turfdry's contract sites at Blackmoor
Golf Club, Hampshire in January 2000, to watch the installation
of the Turfdry
(Greens) Drainage System using Hydraway Sportsdrain.
Having been
impressed with the installation techniques and monitored the
subsequent drainage efficiency, the decision was made to have one green
drained at Sunningdale as a trial in February 2002. The success
of this scheme (1st green, New Course) led to further greens
being drained in Autumn 2002 (10th and 15th greens, New Course
and 9th green, Old Course). For the latter works, the Sunningdale
greens staff worked closely with Turfdry and stripped lines
of turf which were replaced following the drainage installation,
ensuring that the greens were only out of use for a few weeks.
Asked for his views on the greens drainage in 2004, Brian Turner
said that, "the Turfdry Drainage System has improved
the greens immensely, with good grass recovery very evident
on the previously wet areas". He was very pleased with
the results of taking up and replacing the turf and "found
that within 12 months it was difficult to see the drainage lines".
