 Problems at the boundary between the pitch construction site and the adjacent site were caused by the buildup of standing water on the other side of the heras fence. Despite the dry summer weather, the ground was soft and spongey, leading to major r
 Following a dry spell, this trench was dug with an excavator bucket. The degree of saturation within the ground was clear: as soon as excavation reached around 400mm deep the trench rapidy filled with water trapped within the subsoil at that level.
 To prevent further saturation of the site, a cut-off drain was installed along the boundary with the adjacent construction site. However, this failed when the trench collapsed due to water ingress from the surrounding wet ground.

 Drainage operations in dry weather and with dry surface conditions were nonetheless causing excessive sinkage of low-ground-pressure tractor tyres due to the presence of saturated subsoil beneath the upper subsoil layer.
