Turfdry’s expertise in sports pitch construction was recently called upon by Riley Developments for a sports pitch design & construction project in Great Harwood, Lancashire.

With a new housing development being constructed on the site of Great Harwood Rovers FC’s existing pitches, Riley Developments contacted Turfdry to deliver the superlative natural grass sports facilities for which it is increasingly known. Drawing on its 20 years of experience, Turfdry fine-tuned an existing brief provided by the client to provide an optimal playing experience and drainage performance for a suite of four new football pitches: one full size pitch, and three smaller pitches for U7-U8, U9-U10, and U11-U12 age ranges.

After performing a topographical survey of the area Turfdry produced a 3D model for the new pitches, which was connected via design software to the laser control systems on board the construction machinery: an array of excavators, together with CAT D5 & D6 bulldozers. Subsequent to the initial construction works, Turfdry’s drainage team installed the unique Turfdry Drainage System using Hydraway Sportsdrain on all four of the pitches; this technologically superior alternative to conventional plastic pipe drains water up to three times more quickly, and is supremely clog resistant - delivering long-lasting drainage performance.

As a result of the client’s desired handover date, the pitches were turfed, whilst some outlying surrounds were cultivated and seeded to stay within the project’s budget. With the majority of the works completed in 2016, Turfdry will return to the site to complete some minor elements, before implementing a maintenance programme until handover.
